Eye diseases, refractive errors and their correction methods are the topics covered at a scientific symposium organized by the Department of Ophthalmology and Optometry of Nicolae Testemitanu State University of Medicine and Pharmacy in partnership with the Society of Orthokeratology and Myopia Management, and the Society of Glaucoma and Ocular Inflammation from the Republic of Moldova. The symposium took place on February 22 and brought together about 100 participants - students from the 3rd and 4th years of studies, Optometry specialty, master's students and resident doctors, scientific and didactic staff from the Departments of Ophthalmology and Optometry, as well as ophthalmologists.

University professor Valeriu Cusnir, head of the Department of Ophthalmology and Optometry, has specified that the scientific event supports the work of ophthalmologists and optometrists as regards establishing the diagnosis or prescribing treatment for the eye conditions faced by their patients. "Eye diseases are becoming more common among both adults and children, and they should not be neglected," emphasized the professor. The doctor recommended that people pay more attention when they feel discomfort in their eyes and visit the specialist doctor as quickly as possible, to avoid the harshest diagnosis - blindness.

Cristina Tagadiuc, first-year resident doctor, Department of Ophthalmology and Optometry, emphasized that the scientific symposium was particularly important for the professional growth of medical specialists in the field of optometry and ophthalmology. For young specialists, these conferences offer the opportunity to take over good practices from more experienced colleagues, to familiarize themselves with updated information on the diagnosis and management of eye pathologies.

"It is important that these events be organized regularly for doctors, thus giving them the opportunity to become aware of the news in the field and, respectively, to provide the highest quality medical services to the population", mentioned Cristina Tagadiuc. Dry eye syndrome is the topic that most impressed the young resident at this forum. From her little experience as an ophthalmologist, she met many patients with this condition, which has quite serious consequences.

Corneal dystrophies, keratoconus management, amblyopia in children and adults were among the topics addressed at the symposium. Clinical cases on scleral lenses in dry eye syndrome were presented, as well as the latest eye care products.

The scientific symposium was preceded on the same day by a course on "Contact lenses": indications, rules of use and maintenance, attended by Optometry students, master's students and resident doctors, scientific and didactic staff from the Department of Ophthalmology and Optometry and practicing ophthalmologists. The course was held by optical engineer Cristian Daniel Bolboceanu, specialist in education and professional development at an eye care products company (Romania), who also demonstrated a masterclass on the correct application of contact lenses.
